The equation adds up to the perfect cup of coffee
Mathematicians are using complex calculations to find out how to make a perfect cup of coffee.
Published in the SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics, the study looked at drip filter coffee machines and how the process of grinding beans affected the drink’s taste.
Researchers found that the size of coffee grains affected the way that coffee came out of a filter machine.
“The really surprising thing to us is that there are really two processes by which coffee is extracted from grains,” co-author William Lee told the BBC.
“There’s a very quick process by which coffee’s extracted from the surface of the grains. And then there’s a slower tail-off where coffee comes out of the interior of the grains.”
