Government launches ‘wide-ranging’ horsemeat review
The government announced a “wide ranging” review of the horsemeat scandal to “restore and maintain consumer confidence” in the food chain, on April 17.
Food and farm minister David Heath said that the review would also consider the responsibilities of food businesses and practice throughout the wider food chain.
He added that investigations into food fraud concerning the horsemeat scandal were continuing under the leadership of the City of London Police.
The review would include audit, testing, food authenticity, food safety and health issues.
“It will advise us of vulnerabilities within the food chain and its regulatory framework that might be exploited for other fraudulent activity,” said Heath.
He repeated that food fraud was “completely unacceptable”.
