Horsemeat found in products from Taco Bell, Birds Eye and Brakes
The March, Food Standards Agency (FSA) tests revealed four beef products sold by Birds Eye, fast food outlet Taco Bell and foodservice firm Brakes contained horsemeat.
All three firms’ products were found to contain horsemeat above the 1% threshold. The third set of FSA results brought the total number of tests to 5,430, of which more than 99% continued to show no horse DNA at or above the level of 1%.
Birds Eye said it would be introducing a new ongoing DNA testing programme to ensure no beef meat leaves its facilities without DNA testing.
Meanwhile, Taco Bell and Brakes both apologised to its customers, with the latter saying it had been “let down” by suppliers.
