Spekulatius demand up 10%
The popular biscuits from Holland saw demand rise by 10% over the past three years, according to Tesco.
Traditionally spelt speculaas in Dutch, the spiced shortcrust biscuits are thin, crunchy and caramelised. An image is stamped onto one side pf the biscuit – traditionally based on the stories of St Nicholas.
A paste variant of the biscuit has become popular in recent years, which has a similar consistency and colour to peanut butter – but has a sweet, gingerbread-like flavour.
