Don’t miss the latest festive European food trends identified by Tesco in this photogallery.

Britain’s biggest retailer claimed festive fruit breads such as stollen and panettone have grown in popularity, thanks to the growth of European Christmas markets in the UK.

It also identified high demand for German gingerbread shapes called lebkuchen and spekulatius – a type of biscuit popular in Holland and Belgium.

‘Continental festive sweet treats’

Tesco’s Christmas cake buyer James Taylor said: “The popularity of European Christmas markets and food have given Brits a real taste for continental festive sweet treats.

“For many families stollen and panettone and gingerbread houses are now as much festive staples as mince pies and Christmas puddings.”

Tesco has also started selling a gingerbread house kit that consumers can construct themselves – another German festive tradition.

However, traditional festive treats were still a strong driving force of the retailer’s Christmas food sales, which it reinforced by planning to give out thousands of free mince pies across the UK.

Mince pie van

Tesco’s mince pie van will be visiting locations across the UK for a second year, going door-to-door handing out packs of its own-label mince pies.
