Lidl UK recalls cheese due to sulphites
Lidl UK recalled its ‘Deluxe Mature Cheddar with Pickled Onions & Chives’ product with a use by date of June 8 2015 due to an undeclared presence of sulphites.
The product was recalled on April 14 because it was deemed a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy to sulphites.
Sulphites are preservatives used in the production of some foods and drinks.
It is rare for someone to be allergic to sulphites, Allergy UK claimed. However, sulphites can cause allergy-like symptoms in people with underlying asthma and allergic rhinitis, it added.
The most common reaction is wheezing, tight chest and cough. The incidence of sulphite sensitivity in the general population is thought to be less than 2%, but this rises to between 5% and 13% in asthmatics.
“If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to sulphites, do not eat it,” Lidl UK said in a statement on its product recall notice.
“Instead, return it to a Lidl UK store for a full refund. Other ‘Deluxe’ products are not affected by this recall. Any customers with queries or concerns can contact customer services on 03704 441234.”
