The British Poultry council’s Shraddha Kaul explains the importance of training the next generation of food industry professionals.

As we head into an era of unprecedented challenges, recruiting, developing and retaining high-calibre talent will be critical to bolstering the heart of Britain’s food supply and securing it for generations to come.

As a responsible and thriving food sector, British poultry meat has built a strong track record of building skills, creating fulfilling opportunities and improving productivity, while ensuring that our workers match the uptake of innovation in technology.

We’ve launched new apprenticeship standards in poultry agriculture to ensure that our workers are fully trained, skilled and ready to excel in their careers.

Developing standards

We’re also contributing to the development of standards across the food supply chain, from engineering and processing to butchery and food science.

These new standards are much more rigorous than just passing exams and place greater emphasis on all-round development and performance in the workplace. At the end of the programme, apprentices complete an end-point assessment that considers skills gained, as well as exam performance.

Our vision for the new model of poultry apprenticeships is one that delivers tangible skills and mentoring in the workplace, allows employers to grow their skills base effectively, and enables apprentices to realise their full potential.

Lifeblood of our sector

We know that our people are the lifeblood of our sector and they are the ones that enable it to flourish year after year.

We’re committed to creating apprenticeship opportunities that turn into fulfilling careers, building the skills of our workers and enabling them to move around the supply chain. We’ll be doing everything we can to build a pipeline of talent and bolster the heart of Britain’s food supply.

Shraddha Kaul is public affairs and public relations manager at the British Poultry Council.
