A total of 20 new jobs will be created at a new £10M whisky distillery being built in Scotland, following approval from the Scottish Borders Council.

The Three Stills Company (TTSC) acquired the site at Hawick in the Scottish Borders in November 2015.

It confirmed plans to convert the buildings, which would include a visitor centre to complement existing local tourist attractions. The site will be the first distillery to be built in Hawick in 180 years, according to TTSC.

A report from the Scottish Borders Council confirmed the planning approval and said the scheme complied with the local development plan.

“The development is appropriate for this town centre site and would be in keeping with the mixed use nature of the area,” it said.

‘Creation of Jobs’

“The proposal would result in the creation of jobs and would attract visitors to the town.

“The proposal would result in the renovation and re-use of the listed buildings which are on the ‘at risk’ register.”

TTSC general manager John Fordyce said: “The Scottish Borders Council and local community have been very supportive of our plan.

“We will be creating jobs in the local area by tapping into a skilled labour market and increasing tourism in the region through our visitor centre.”

‘Skilled labour market’

The distillery will have a production capacity of 1.54M of pure alcohol a year.

Earlier this year, Mossburn Distillers lodged plans for a £40M whisky distillery development near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, that will create up 50 new jobs.

Meanwhile, a new craft distillery is set to open this August in Kent, creating at least 10 jobs.

One of the owners of the distillery, Stephen Russell, told ”The equipment going into our distillery is quite special. There is equipment in our craft distillery that you simply won’t find in other craft distilleries.”
