The Co-op has voiced concerns about the introduction of ‘ethical’ schemes that could be confused with Fairtrade, after chocolate maker Green & Black’s unveiled a new non-organic chocolate range that has ditched the familiar logo.
The Fairtrade Foundation aims to boost the amount of Fairtrade certified fruit and nuts and intermediate ingredients for UK manufacturers of compound products such as cakes, biscuits, ice cream and ready meals.
Sales of Fairtrade certified products increased 15 per cent in 2009, according to the global Fairtrade body, Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO).
