Ornua Foods UK, the producer of brands such as Pilgrims Choice cheddar and Kerrygold butter, is to focus on its green credentials with the appointment of Nadia Bidzinska as its new head of sustainability.

Bidzinska — who will be based at Ornua Foods UK headquarters in Leek, Staffordshire — will help shape and drive forward the business’s sustainability strategy.

Her appointment follows that of Dave Fitzgerald as group sustainability director earlier this year. Fitzgerald will work closely with Bidzinska in the implementation of Ornua’s Growing For Good, Sustainably strategy.

Packaging reduction

Ornua Foods said it has a strong commitment to addressing its sustainability responsibilities, underpinned by a range of initiatives introduced by the business including its focus on packaging reduction.

Bidzinska is a graduate of Lancaster University with an MSc in Ecology & Environment. She is an environment and sustainability professional with over 13 years’ experience in various industry sectors across the UK economy.

Having worked as an ecological consultant, followed by several years in the waste and recycling sector, she most recently helped shape and implement the first comprehensive group sustainability strategy for Laing O’Rourke, a large multinational construction and engineering business, where she held the role of environmental sustainability leader.

Dynamic sustainability strategy

“Ornua already has an ambitious and dynamic sustainability strategy in place at group level and in my role at Ornua Foods UK, I look forward to specifically developing and activating a targeted sustainability strategy that not only dovetails with that of the group, but also provides us with the necessary focus to channel our resources into areas where we can have the biggest impact, such as circular packaging and emissions reduction,”  said Bidzinska.

What attracted me to joining Ornua was its clear commitment to addressing the sustainability challenge. Food is such an important part of our daily lives and anything we can do to improve the sustainability of our iconic and revered product portfolio will directly translate to helping our consumers shop more sustainably every day.”

Ornua Foods UK, part of Ornua Group, produces and purchases butter and cheese which is packed into a range of formats selling into the retail own-label and branded market, primarily in the UK.

The cheese packing facility in Leek, Staffordshire is state-of-the-art and there are plans for ongoing investment for the current and future years.
