High street sandwich retailer Greggs has announced that Ian Durant will take over as chairman of the board next May.

Durant was appointed as independent non-executive director on October 5 2011 and is currently chairman of the audit committee.

He is also chairman of Capital and Countries Properties and a non-executive director of Greene King and the Home Retail Group.

Stepping down

Durant will become chairman after next May’s AGM, when Derek Netherton will step down after 10 years at the helm.

Netherton was appointed to the board on March 1 2002. He remains chairman of Opera North and is a non-executive director of three Canada Life UK companies.

The search for a new independent non-executive director to take over the chair of the audit committee is now starting.

Greggs won The British Sandwich Association’s ‘Specialist Sandwich Chain of the Year’ award earlier this year.
