The cold facts about cold storage

Delivering greater pallet selectivity and order assembly has helped a cold store operator meet consumers’ changing demand for frozen food.

The operator's client makes premium quality 'home-made' food that has been frozen in small batches for sale in farm shops and delicatessens.

Previously, the firm had employed drive-in and powered mobile racking in its cold store because storage periods were longer and most movements were full pallet loads. However, as demand grew for its client's product, it reconfigured its cold store to assemble individual case quantity customer orders.

The firm chose Flexi articulated trucks and low level order pickers. The Flexi does not require wire guidance or steel rails so the aisle width could be set to suit the customer's order assembly profile. The lack of steel guide rails meant that the first rack beam could be set at two metres to allow fast case picking at ground level.
