Recent legislative changes will dramatically restrict the use of landfill to dispose of organic matter and meat waste. This is forcing many food processors to carefully review their waste management policies

The movement of the waste through processing to an external area for offsite removal can be inefficient, time consuming and very expensive.

Traditionally, waste handling involves manual movement of waste bins; plus the use of conveyors, compressed air and water flumes.

However, there is an alternative that not only transports the waste through a closed pipework system, but also shreds and macerates it so effectively that the volume is reduced by as much as 60%.

This cost-effective solution for the movement of organic and meat waste makes use of an open hopper BTM pump manufactured by German company Seepex.

The special feature of the Seepex BTM range is the open hopper with an auger feed screw prior to the pumping elements, together with a set of patented rotating and stationary knives.

The simultaneous transport within a closed system prevents oxidation of the liquid and environmental pollution by odours.

The system is now extensively used to streamline many food waste handling applications within factories, as well as in-vessel composting, anaerobic digestion and biogas applications.
