Porrelli Speciality Desserts has doubled capacity at its Paisley, Renfrewshire ice cream manufacturing plant with a new continuous freezer.

The increased output has improved Porrelli's response times to customer requirements for sorbets and dairy and non-dairy ice cream products in containers from 0.5-10 litres.

"We chose the Tetra Pak Hoyer Frigus SF600 continuous freezer as it has a vertical barrel which is far easier to strip down and clean, and it has a one-piece blade which is much safer and easier to handle," says Enzo Durante, Porrelli's md.

"Product quality is good as well. With an overrun of between 60% and 100%, we can just set the machine and let it run and we know that we can maintain consistency throughout."

The freezer has a capacity to run at 600l/h, but it gives Porrelli the flexibility to produce as little as 160l/h for short runs or use it for more labour-intensive filled products.

This is achieved without any loss of performance, thanks to a hot gas defrosting system, which ensures accurate regulation of viscosity as well as automatic freeze-up protection.
