Discount retailer Lidl has recalled two batches of gravy granules, after harmful levels of a chemical found in paint stripper were discovered in them.

It leads a number of food recalls in the past week, including spinach contaminated with metal and salad with incorrect allergy labelling.

The chemical, known as xylene, can cause adverse effects in people, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

The contaminant levels in Kania’s meat and chicken gravy granules – sold in Lidl stores – exceeded those to avoid these health problems, leading to a recall of the products.

Consumers who have bought the products were advised to not eat them and instead return them to a Lidl store for a full refund.

Chicken and meat gravies

The recall affected 300g packs of the chicken and meat gravies, with a ‘best before end’ date of October 2017 and November 2017.

Meanwhile, Nisa Retail was forced to recall its Heritage Fresh Salad, after packs were found to contain small pieces of metal.

The recall applied to 200g packs of the product, with lot codes of 5016 and 5026. Consumers were advised to return the salad to the store it was bought from for a full refund.

Incorrect labelling of allergens forced the recall of products from retailer Co-op and salad producer Delphi Food Products.

Co-op recalled its Irresistible gingerbread latte cake because the product contained walnuts, which were not mentioned on the label.

Allergy to nuts

Cakes with a best before date of December 21 2016 were affected by the recall. The company advised consumers who had bought the product that had an allergy to nuts not to eat it.

Consumers seeking a refund should contact Co-op customer relations for a full refund.

Undeclared allergens also forced the recall of four of Delphi Food Products’ salads and dip last week.

Delphi’s Edamame beans and white cheese salad was recalled because it contained undeclared soya, while its Meze 4 falafel with fresh houmous dip was recalled due to the presence of undeclared sesame.

Both its Puy Lentil and couscous salad and its taramasalata dip were recalled because they contained wheat.

Delhpi advised customers with an intolerance to any of the allergens to return the products to the store they were bought from for a full refund.
