Having to remove the word ‘probiotics’ from its products was costly in the short-term, but hasn’t impacted long term sales, the boss of a family-run yogurt producer has claimed.

A large investment across packaging was the main disruption, Lancashire Farm Dairies md Azhar Zouq told Food Manufacture.co.uk in this exclusive video.

Health claim

The European Food Safety Authority ruled in 2012 that the health claims of probiotics were unproven, making it illegal for food producers to use the term on their products. Lancashire Farm Dairies was given six months to comply.

Zouq remained hopeful that the ruling would eventually be overturned, but said it wasn’t critical to the future growth of the business.

Meanwhile, look out for our Me and My Factory interview with Zouq in the January edition of Food Manufacture magazine.
