Dalehead Foods has unveiled a new multi-million pound abattoir and production facility in Spalding, Lincolnshire, which it hopes will boost British pork exports to the US.

The newly refurbished site now has a 500m2 pre chill extension that Dalehead claims will help reduce carcass drip loss. Also included in the refurbishment is a modern carcass grading system and a high-tech lorry wash.

Seamus Rooney, md of Dalehead Foods, said: "The upgrade should enable us to secure US Department of Agriculture approval, which in the long run could boost pork exports to the US and ultimately improve the economic outlook for British pig farmers."

The project took 18-months to complete and was part funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the EU and the East Midlands Pork Producers.

‘Boost the economy’

Commenting on the project, food minister David Heath said: "DEFRA has invested £2.4M in this innovative project which will really help to boost the economy and promote British pork on a global stage.

"It's encouraging to hear that the improvements the East Midland Pork Producers has made to both the abattoir and processing plant will now enable them to export to America and beyond.”

Heath added he hoped to see more projects like this to help create jobs and economic growth “desperately” needed in rural areas.

Dalehead Foods is one of the firms backing Britain’s first bespoke food engineering degree to be launched at Sheffield Hallam University next week.
