The Procter & Gamble Company has snapped up the supplements company for $3.8 billion in cash after signing an agreement with consumer investment giant, L Catterton.
Thorne has been operating since 1984, with L Catterton investing in the business in October 2023 after recognising the demand for clinical-based products and personalised healthcare.
Over the course of Thorne’s 42-years, it has firmly cemented itself within the category of health and wellness, serving athletes and consumers alike; with L Catterton helping propel its more recent stage of growth through strong recruitment drives and marketing, and investment into R&D and infrastructure.
Among its portfolio is a range of nutritional supplements and tech-based innovations such as Taia, an AI-powered wellness advisor.
Colin Watts, CEO of Thorne, said, “L Catterton has been an outstanding partner over the past several years. They shared our long-term vision for Thorne, investing in our people, strengthening our capabilities across digital, AI, and supply chain, and advancing our scientific rigor, world-class manufacturing, quality standards, and innovation that define Thorne – all while helping us better serve healthcare practitioners and customers.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and grateful for the role they played in helping prepare Thorne for this next chapter.”
Its acquisition by P&G marks the next step of its growth journey and will also help expand P&G Health Care’s offering, as consumer interest in self-care, prevention and personalised wellness continues to grow.
“As we looked to the future, we kept coming back to one question: What will best position Thorne to continue fulfilling its mission?” Watts said.
“We believe P&G is the right partner to help us expand our impact while staying true to the values and standards that have always defined Thorne.”
“This is an important step for P&G’s Personal Health Care business,” added Paul Gama, CEO P&G Health Care. “Consumer interest in self-care, prevention, wellness, and personalized health continues to grow, and Thorne strengthens our position in premium wellness with a trusted, science-backed brand that complements our existing portfolio.”
The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The move will also see P&G acquire Thorne from L Catterton’s Flagship Fund.
