Wonky and surplus subscription service Earth & Wheat has saved 600 tonnes of food waste since its inception three years ago.

Set up by James Eid in 2021, Earth & Wheat has saved the equivalent of 50 double decker buses in weight of food waste since its launch.

After witnessing the amount of bread his own family’s bakery in Hertfordshire had been forced to throw out every day, Eid was inspired to start his business.

The result of the launch of the ‘world’s first’ wonky bread subscription service, with Eid selling 10,000 boxes in the first six weeks.

Celebrating its third birthday this week, the company has grown from ‘wonky bread’ boxes, which it sources from independent bakers, to working with farms to redistribute ‘wonky vegetables’ too.

With data from WRAP estimating that 16% of all UK food waste occurs at the point at which it is produced, Earth & Wheat has set its ambitions to save another 400 tonnes from going to landfill before the end of 2024.

Commenting, Eid, now 22-years old, said: We’re delighted to be celebrating our third birthday at Earth & Wheat. It has certainly been a whirlwind three years! Earth & Wheat started as just a concept and our mission was to reduce food waste from the point at which it is created and help save the planet.

“Now we want to try and rescue a total of 1,000 tonnes by the end of the year which we don’t think is too much to ask, so we look forward to this being our next challenge in 2024.”
