Food Manufacturing Awards

Family is often the best source of inspiration for young people and what could be more inspirational than visiting an uncle working for the sugar industry in Trinidad?
Hovis senior improvement manager Jessica Lowe was charmed by the food industry at an early age after visiting her uncle – who was a chemical engineer in the sugar industry – in Trinidad many times as a child.
“I’ve always thought the food industry was and is an interesting place to work and my uncle was a big inspiration in my career choice,” she said.
Although there was no doubt about whether a career in the food industry was a good choice, being shortlisted for the Young Talent of the Year Award really confirmed her decision, she added.
‘A good feeling’
“It was really good to find out I was shortlisted,” she said. “I’m happy and humbled by the whole thing and the fact that people think I could [have won] the award is a good feeling.”
Being recognised by the Food Manufacture Group was also a major sense of achievement for Lowe, she said.
“Food Manufacture is such a big brand name and from my experience, a lot of important people from major companies read it, so it’s good for me in that sense too.”
The future for Lowe will most definitely involve food and drink manufacturing, Lowe confirmed. However, the huge scale of the industry had made it difficult to pin down what she wanted to end up doing and where, she said.
