Cutting food waste the top trend for 2014
Cutting food waste was identified as the top of 10 food and drink industry trends for 2014 by Innova Market Insights, in November.
The firm said the ‘Waste Not Want Not’ trend reflected food manufacturers’ efforts to reduce food loss and waste.
Food waste during production and at the retailer and consumer end of the food-supply chain will all be heavily scrutinized by businesses throughout 2014, Innova predicted.
The second trend was improving consumer trust, which reflected recent food safety scares and scandals that had crippled consumer confidence, said the research firm.
Trends towards back to basics, small-scale innovators and a more holistic approach to nutrition made up the top five.
The other five trends were: ‘New’ superfoods, Rise of the hybrid, protein, stealth strategies and alternative alternatives.
Lu Ann Williams, director of Innovation at Innova, also said traceability would be high on the agenda.
