Purina has announced a multi-year investment of €50 million (around £42.9M) into its Portogruaro factory in Italy.
Founded in 1986, this site is one of Purina’s most advanced within its European network. Over the last 40 years, it has become a centre of excellence for the production of food for cats and dogs; and today is home to several flagship premium brands within the Purina portfolio, such as Purina Pro Plan and Purina One.
Set to be injected into two major projects over the next three years, the €50 million investment will see an upgrade of the site and the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant.
The erection of an internal facility for wastewater treatment will allow the factory to directly manage an activity currently entrusted to external plants.
Designed to support the site’s future growth, Purina says the new plant will help optimise wastewater management; reducing transport to external facilities and the related environmental impacts, while also delivering benefits in terms of operational efficiency.
This news follows the recent announcement of a new Purina site in Mantova. While Portogruaro becomes more and more focused on dry pet food production, Mantova will be dedicated to the production of wet food.
This forms part of wider strategy to fortify Purina’s industrial presence in Italy and consolidate its increasingly central role within the company’s European manufacturing network.
“With Portogruaro and Mantova, Purina confirms a clear choice: to continue investing to support the growth of pet care in Europe,” said Fabio Degli Esposti, managing director of Purina Italy and regional director for Southern Europe.
“The new investments announced today upgrade a site that, for forty years, has contributed to the quality and innovation of Purina’s portfolio, strengthen our expertise in the super-premium segment and the strategic role of both Portogruaro and the new factory that will be built in Mantova within Purina’s European manufacturing network.”
