The supermarket chain is withdrawing its Waitrose Essential Pitted Black Olives from sale after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the product.
The recall applies to 120g packs of the product with use-by dates of 13 September 2026, 18 September 2026 and 27 September 2026. The recall covers all of the UK except Northern Ireland.
Symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes can be similar to flu and include a high temperature, muscle aches and pains, chills, feeling or being sick, and diarrhoea.
However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications such as meningitis.
Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those aged 65 and over, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old, and people with weakened immune systems.
In its customer notice, Waitrose said: “We are recalling Waitrose Essential Pitted Black Olives 120g as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of listeria, which may cause illness if consumed.
“We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.”
Customers who have purchased any of the affected products should not consume them and should instead return them to their nearest Waitrose store for a full refund.
