Hygienic, slip-resistant flooring

Meat processing company Grassroots Foods, based at Nelson in east Lancashire, appointed hygienic flooring and drainage specialist Kemtile to supply and fit out its new processing plant.

Over a 10-week period, one of the company’s installation teams laid almost 1,700m2​ of – numbering more than 170,000 – ceramic tiles using the company’s Kagetec sonic vibration method. Kemtile also supplied 21 Wiedemann-Technik stainless steel drainage gullies.

The flooring system not only had to meet stringent food hygiene standards, including British Retail Consortium standards in food safety, it also had to provide durability, slip resistance and longevity.

The Kagetec BS vibration tiling system used makes use of 18mm thick Argelith MV-Tech hexagonal ceramic floor tiles. These are made from fully vitrified porcelain and are said to offer good hygiene and durability.

Most durable floor systems available

When combined with the installation method in which the bed and tile are laid at the same time it is claimed to be one of the most durable floor systems available. It also provides the additional benefit of quick installation as there is no need to wait for screeds to cure.

The building contractor and project manager for the job was G McGuigan Building Contractors of Colne in Lancashire.

The system is also capable of withstanding thermal, mechanical and chemical stresses. Aside from cleaning, it requires no maintenance and comes with a 10-year warranty.

Grassroots Foods’s new facility, which handles beef, pork, chicken and lamb, operates seven days a week, and employs 100 staff to produce 150t of product every day. The new premises will facilitate increased output and capabilities for retail own-label, e-commerce pick-and-pack, foodservice and catering customers across the UK.
