Australian soft drinks brand Remedy has appointed a new MD for the UK and Europe, marking what it calls a “significant milestone” in its growth ambitions.
The Melbourne-based firm has named Santino Luciano to the post. He takes up the role after six years with the business in its native country.
During his time with Remedy, Luciano has held a variety of senior leadership positions, most recently the managing director role for the Asia-Pacific region.
Remedy specialises in kombucha, a fermented health drink, and according to its figures currently accounts for 40% of total UK kombucha sales – more than twice the size of its nearest competitor.
The British kombucha market is now worth an estimated £44 million and is growing at almost 23% year on year, although penetration remains relatively low compared with other markets such as Australia, Canada and the US.
“The UK business has built an exceptional foundation, but the category remains significantly underdeveloped,” Luciano said.
“If the UK reaches similar penetration levels to markets like Australia, the US and Canada, we believe this could become a £190 million category. That is a huge prize – not just for Remedy, but for our retail partners too.”
Luciano’s appointment follows the UK launch of Remedy Sodaly, a new better-for-you soda option.
The firm said the new beverage has proven to be a clear success in its local Australian market and is currently on track to reach AUD $70 million (£37.2 million) this financial year.
Chris Gillard, global CEO at Remedy Drinks, added: “Santino has played an incredibly important role in Remedy’s growth journey and has consistently demonstrated strong commercial leadership, deep category understanding and a clear passion for the brand.
“As Remedy continues to expand internationally, the UK and Europe represent a significant opportunity, and Santino is the ideal person to lead this next phase of growth.”
