The supermarket chain and Sacor, the French manufacturer behind the product have recalled 200g batches of its Bastides Saucisson Sec with a best before date of 4 March 2026.
Sold exclusively in Tesco stores, salmonella has been detected in the product, prompting a major nationwide recall.
A serious bacterial infection, salmonella can cause fever, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and in more severe cases.
As per the standard medical advice, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Tesco are advising anyone who might be experiencing these symptoms to stay away from work, school or nursery until they have ceased for at least 48 hours – as they risk passing on the infection to others.
The illnesses is most commonly picked up from raw or undercooked meat, eggs, unwashed produce and pet contacts – with reptiles and birds being frequent carriers.
The FSA is urging anyone who has bought the product not to consume it, and instead to return it to their nearest Tesco store for a full refund.
Sacor said in its recall notice: “We are voluntarily recalling the Bastides product sold exclusively in Tesco stores, with the best before date 04/03/2026, due to a presence of salmonella.
“If you have purchased this product, do not eat it. Return it to the Tesco store where it was purchased for a full refund, this is an isolated incident and no other Bastides products are known to be affected.”
The Compleat Food Group, which imports and distributes the product on the UK market told Food Manufacture: “The safety and quality of our products is of extreme importance to us, and we take all matters relating to the production, handling and supply of the food we manufacture, import and distribute.
“We are continuing to work closely with the Food Standards Agency, Sacor, Tesco and other relevant industry bodies as part of the ongoing investigation and standard protocols.”
This latest recall follows on from Tesco’s decision to pull two batches of its Grape & Berry Medley last month after salmonella was also detected.
