In the latest episode of The Food Manufacture Podcast, we speak to David Pierce, managing director of beverage brand Frobishers, about his career highlights, navigating a business out of administration and through tough economic times, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

Frobishers was launched in 1992 by ex-navy merchant and pub manager, Mike Dowdeswell, with Pierce taking over in 2009 after he rescued the business was administration.

Prior to entering the world of beverages, Pierce started his career in the entertainment industry as commercial manager for Stage Electrics - a company which provided equipment to theatres and the like. Working closely with the owner, he helped guide the business through rapid growth from £3 million to a £25 million turnover.

In 2004, he joined a small local business – Cobell – made up of three staff members, a turnover of £2 million and a view to seriously grow the business. It during this time, he also took on the role of MD at Frobishers, purchasing a majority interest from administrators of Serious Foods Ltd and then negotiating the subsequent purchase of the remaining shares from the minority shareholders. He then re-structured the business and appointing a new senior team.

After reaching a £45 million turnover with Cobell, Pierce decided to concentrate on Frobishers; and he and his three business partners agreed to sell their shares in Cobell International Ltd.

Since he taking over the helm of Frobishers, Pierce has been instrumental in turning the business around, from loss making £2 million turnover to very profitable beverage firm.

Alongside key milestones in his career, Pierce talks about the current market conditions facing F&B and the importance of clear and early communication - which can “turn you from villain to hero”.
