The expansion follows a significant investment from the Olidor Group, which has doubled the factory’s production capacity, enabled the launch of new product lines, and opened up new job opportunities.
An additional 22,000 square feet of production capacity has been added to The Original Baker’s North Malton site, with the construction of a new facility. The funds have also been used to invest in new equipment and enhance logistical capabilities to support expansion into e-commerce, providing products to smaller independent cafes, retailers and delis.
The expansion is expected to create 30 new jobs over the next 12 months and recruitment is already underway, with roles ranging from bakery operatives and quality controllers, to supervisory positions and specialist food technologists.
Mike Walker, managing director for the business said the move marked a “landmark moment for The Original Baker.”
He added: “The investment from the Olidor Group has enabled us to grow sustainably while staying true to our artisan roots. This expansion has strengthened our position as the leading producer of artisan premium pastry and created rewarding careers for talented people in our community.”
The Original Baker was launched in 2018 by Gill Ridgard and is known for its range of handmade pies, pasties, and sausage rolls.
Ridgard started her first bakery business in 2008 - the Yorkshire Baker which caught the eye of Cranswick, leading to a joint venture.
She later decided to return to her original vision of supplying independent businesses; and together with Cheryl Barrett, set up The Original Baker.
The company became part of the Olidor Group in 2023, joining the investor firm’s portfolio of the Brusco Food Group, Karimix, Four Anjels, The Artful Baker, and Porter Foods.
“We invest in businesses with strong values, exceptional products, and clear growth potential,” commented Andrew Ashby, CEO at Olidor Group.
“The Original Baker ticks every box. Together, we’re building on their artisan heritage while creating a strong future for the brand and the people behind it. The support and backing of a larger group have enabled The Original Baker to make long term investments that will cement their position as the UK’s leading producer of handcrafted sweet and savoury bakery products.”
The latest Companies House Filings for year ended 31 December 2023, show that the Olidor Group witnessed 20% year-on-year turnover growth. Net profit slightly reduced, which the business said was due to continued investment in people and infrastructure.
