The Tesco Watermelon Pizza Kit comes in a 480g pack filled with six wedges of watermelon, a sachet of Greek yoghurt, and a sachet of fruit berry coulis.
The idea is that children can arrange the contents as they wish in the style of a pizza - making the “arduous” task of getting children to eat their five-a-day less so.
Last year, findings from FareShare showed that more than a third of children are eating less fruit compared to 2023.
The results of the YouGov-run study revealed that 34% of parents are buying less fresh fruit now than a year ago as the cost of living crisis continues to put pressure on household budgets.
Despite the results, 89% recognised the positive impact of a diet rich in fresh fruit on the health and wellbeing of their children.
Getting kids to eat fruit as part of their five-a-day is never the easiest of tasks.
Fay Hasnip, Tesco product development manager
“We love the idea of a watermelon pizza-making kit as it makes eating joyful,” explained Tesco product development manager Fay Hasnip.
“Having tested the concept with our own families, we are sure it will delight young and old alike.”
Tesco nutritionist Natasha Maynard added: “Staying hydrated throughout the day can help prevent dehydration. Water and milk are great options for children.
“As well as drinks, we also get some fluids from the foods we eat. Watermelon for example, has a high-water content and counts towards your five-a-day.”
The Watermelon Pizza kits are priced at £3.75. Half a pack is 90kcal and contains 2.3g of fat, 1.5g saturates, 12.5g sugars, and 0.03g salt.
Elsewhere, Matthews Barnes has stepped down as the supermarket’s CEO. He will be replaced by Tesco Group’s current chief commercial officer.
