E.coli sparks recall by cheese manufacturer

A batch of blue cheese is being recalled because Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) has been found in the product.

Because of the possible presence of E.coli, Isle of Mull Cheese is recalling an entire batch of its Hebridean Blue Cheese.

The recall relates to packs with the batch code 8051224 and best before date 10 April 2025, while all pack sizes are being recalled.

The batch code and best before date can be found on the back label of the packaging.

Symptoms caused by ingesting E.coli can include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea and haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal.

Isle of Mull Cheese has issued point of sale notices that will displayed in all retail stores that sell the product to inform consumers about the recall.

The notices urge anyone that has purchased a pack from the impacted batch to return it to the store where it was purchase for a full refund.

The Isle of Mull is an island located off the west coast of Scotland, where Isle of Mull Cheese has operated since 1980.

In addition the cheese, the business also produces its own whisky on the farm.
