What is your area of focus / What certifications or qualifications are you working towards?

I am currently working towards my Level 7 Solicitor Qualification Exam (SQE) through an apprenticeship program at Starbucks.

What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in food manufacturing?

While my apprenticeship is law-focused, my journey in the food and beverage industry began when I started working as a barista at Starbucks during university.

I developed a deep appreciation for the brand and its culture, and my experience visiting the Starbucks Farmer Support Centre in Costa Rica further solidified my passion for the coffee industry.

This experience, along with my legal aspirations, led me to pursue an apprenticeship within Starbucks, allowing me to gain hands-on legal experience within the food and beverage sector.

How did you find out about this apprenticeship programme?

After gaining work experience in Starbucks' legal department through a connection I made on the Origin Experience trip to Costa Rica, I learned about an opening for a paralegal position. The role offered the opportunity to enrol in an apprenticeship that would allow me to qualify as a solicitor while working within the business. It was an incredible opportunity that aligned perfectly with my career goals.

What are some of the key skills you’ve learned so far?

I’ve developed a strong foundation in legal practice, particularly within corporate and commercial law. I’ve had the opportunity to work across an amazing blend of legal areas I never thought I’d be exposed to so early in my career.

Additionally, my apprenticeship has helped me refine essential professional skills, such as client communication, business writing and confidence in corporate environments.

How has your mentor or trainer supported your growth?

My managers and mentors at Starbucks have been incredibly supportive. They respect my dedicated study time and ensure I have the flexibility needed to balance work and learning. I’ve received valuable guidance from colleagues from across the company, which has accelerated my growth and deepened my understanding of legal practice in the food and beverage industry.

What has been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship?

One of the most rewarding moments was sharing my journey at the Starbucks UK Support Centre’s weekly coffee tasting meeting. Being able to inspire others by showing how I transitioned from a Barista to a legal apprentice was a pivotal moment for me. It highlighted my personal growth and the incredible opportunities available within Starbucks.

Where do you see yourself in five years within the food industry?

Once I’ve completed the apprenticeship scheme, I’ll be a qualified solicitor, so I’ll have to apply for a new corporate council role, whether in Starbucks or elsewhere, as I’m currently a paralegal. I would love to stay on at Starbucks if I can, that would be my dream, to progress within the company.
