Faulty drive belt identified as cause of Addo recall

‘Huge cost to Addo’

Commenting on the Addo recall, Hilary Ross, head of retail, food and hospitality at law firm DWF said: “Addo Group’s mass recall of more than 50 products is a manufacturer’s worst nightmare – and will no doubt result in huge costs, both financial and reputational. ​

“​The Group will be looking at a six-figure sum for recall, which are likely to involve advertising costs as well as point of sale information. The cost to the brand’s reputation could be equally high if this incident results in the loss of accounts with major retailers.”​ ​

The costs could be mitigated if Addo Group is insured, said Ross, but manufacturers often did not have this type of insurance and even if they do, the nuances of the policies could make it very difficult to claim.

“​​​Addo Group is a leading manufacturer in the UK market, with many sites and a turnover of over £1bn,​ “​​To satisfy its retail customers, it must explain how the damage to machinery occurred and what it is doing to ensure that this kind of incident never happens again. ​

“​​Unless Addo Group can provide these reassurances quickly, there’s a real risk that its major customers will start sourcing elsewhere – and it will be difficult for the Group to regain these accounts.”​
