Border Biscuits ramps up production

Border Biscuits is adding another production line to its Scottish manufacturing site in a bid to grow its market share south of the Border.

The biscuit manufacturer plans to expand production at the facility in Lanark in the central belt of Scotland after securing a seven figure funding package from Clydesdale Bank.

Border Biscuits sales and marketing director Mark Bruce said: “Our latest funding package from Clydesdale Bank will allow us to significantly expand our operations and grow UK and international sales.”

More than 24 types of biscuits

Border Biscuits produces more than 24 different types of biscuit and supplies the big four supermarkets, independent retailers, wholesalers and food service businesses.

In 2013, the biscuit company announced plans to build a new warehouse on the Lanark site using funding from the Clydesdale Bank.

The firm planned to increase its storage space by more than a third as part of its plans to grow exports and develop its overseas market.

‘Innovative and exciting’ food company

Simon Kerr, head of Clydesdale Bank’s Lanarkshire business and private banking centre, said: “We’re extremely pleased to support Border Biscuits, one of the country’s most innovative and exciting food companies.”

Established in 1984, Border Biscuits initially had just four varieties of biscuits, almost no machinery, four employees and a very small factory.

After strong growth, the company significantly increased volumes with the introduction of its first automated production line about five years ago.

It generated a turnover over £14.5M in its last financial year.

Border Biscuits won the Cakes and Biscuits Company of the Year Award at the Food Manufacture Excellence Awards in 2012.
