Tesco and Sainsbury – together with their suppliers – came under fire for their food waste policies by campaign group Stop the Rot. The group, backed by TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whiingstall, delivered 200,000 signatures urging the retailers to cut waste by at least 30% by 2025.
Tesco was also lampooned by Unite the Union for its “pitiful pay offer” to warehouse and distribution staff.
Rank Hovis also announced that 100 jobs were at risk at its Wigan factory after plans were unveiled to close one of its production lines.
Paris terror attacks
The ramifications of the recent terrorist attack in Paris also reverberated on the food industry with 32 businesses pulling out of the Food Ingredients Europe show in the French capital.
There was good news for Finsbury Food Group, Britvic and First Milk which all posted positive financial results and Speciality Breads, which opened a £3M factory.
