UK food manufacturers are still being unfairly criticised for using palm oil, despite the work they have done to source it sustainably, according to the corporate social responsibility (CSR) director of a global food oil business.

Food manufacturers should be congratulated on the work they’ve done to source sustainable palm oil, said Judith Murdoch, CSR director at AAK, the edible oils and fats supplier, in this exclusive podcast for FoodManufacture.co.uk.

‘Only a small part of the picture’

Criticism from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) saying otherwise was unfair, as the UK had moved the market on, she said. The NGOs were looking at the global market, but the UK accounted for only a small percentage of total palm oil usage, she said.

“The UK is using roughly 450,000t of palm oil per year, versus somewhere like India that’s using 750,000t per month and that’s the difficulty the world faces,” said Murdoch.
