Food waste cut by bakery firm’s shelf-life extender

A UK manufacturer and supplier of functional fats and oils to the bakery sector has targeted food waste with the launch of a shelf-life extender.

The UK wastes 15Mt of food annually, with bread ranked top of the list and cake at number nine, according to AAK.

The firm said its Crestawhip and Supertex ranges reduce the breakdown of starches in baked goods and slow the staling process. In cakes, the products are claimed to create a “moister” and “more appetising crumb”.

The two product launches are part of AAK's wider research and development programme to reduce food waste.
