Foil tray manufacturer works for a greener future

Foil tray manufacturer Nicholl Food Packaging is one of the firm's behind Alupro's (the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation's) recycling and awareness-building programme. This has enabled foil to qualify for the Widely Recycled at Recycling Points (WRRP) labelling in the British Retail Consortium's On-Pack Recycling Label scheme.

The Aerofoil programme was launched in 2009 to help local authorities add foil and aerosols to their recycling services. It was funded by Alupro foil converter member firms, the largest of which was Nicholl. Additional funding was provided by the British Aerosol Manufacturers Association, Unilever and Tata Steel.

The WRRP recognition has been achieved thanks to the Aerofoil programme's expansion of the kerbside collection infrastructure for aluminium foil trays.

To qualify, 65% of local authorities must collect the material with kerbside or 'bring' systems. This criterion is set to increase to 70% in 2012 and 75% in 2013 but Alupro says the sector is in line to meet these requirements, thanks to the Aerofoil programme.
