The entire contents of the Cumbrian Seafoods Solway Estate factory in Maryport is to be auctioned off, despite attempts to re-open the site after it was mothballed just over a year ago.

In October 2008 the company announced redundancies after deciding to mothball the Solway site due to declining volumes. It said, at the time, that it had hoped to re-open the plant but has now confirmed its permanent closure.

Therefore, in March, the plant and its assets, are to go under the hammer "at a fraction of the original purchase cost", according to plant auctioneer Pro Auction. This includes fish and ready meals processing equipment, frying lines, tray sealing lines, refrigeration equipment and more. A company spokeswoman said that substantial new business at the Grants factory, also in Maryport, and its Whitehaven factory had allowed many workers to be redeployed.
