Bernard Matthews is rolling out Isotrak vehicle logistics software to its entire distribution fleet, expecting it to deliver fuel savings of 5-10%, worth up to £80,000 per year.

The move represents the first time that the poultry processor has implemented full vehicle monitoring (telematics) and tracking.

“The telematics system records and reports all vehicle and driving activity, as well as tracking the vehicle, so that the transport manager and planners can track vehicles and see how the driver has been performing,” said George Youngs, Bernard Matthews head of logistics.

The Isotrak Active Transport Management System (ATMS) also automatically generated reports on factors such as vehicle fuel efficiency, driver performance league tables and vehicle idling, said Youngs. “We have also been able to use the in-cab units for direct text and voice communication to replace existing cab phones,” he added.

Youngs said he hoped the system would also highlight areas requiring further driver training. Bernard Matthews has invested £25,000 in the system in its first year and has earmarked £7,000 of investment year-on-year after that.

“Bernard Matthews chose Isotrak after a three-way tender process because it was the most versatile of the telematics systems we saw, with by far the best suite of technical management reports,” said Youngs.

He said that there had also been few hidden additional costs, that technical support on offer was the most comprehensive, adding: “We quickly developed a strong relationship with Alan Gunner at Isotrak, who was able to turn the project from initial contact to setting up the trial very quickly.”

Bernard Matthews said ATMS would help reduce the trailer loading times, excessive turnaround times and unauthorised stops during delivery trips.

“Isotrak is honoured to be working with Bernard Matthews,” said Craig Sears-Black, Isotrak sales and marketing director. “We’re delighted to have shown already how they’ll secure long-term financial benefits within their fleet.”
