With the old-style board tube boasting plastic stoppers, Smarties could have gone either way – but Nestlé has opted for an all-cartonboard dispensing pack.

The hexagonal-profile carton has a reclosable flip-top lid and a portioning system that dispenses only one or two Smarties at a time. Tamper evidence was another consideration in the new design.

The pack is produced by Field Packaging using Neocart board from Stora Enso, and is supplied to Nestlé in the UK and Germany. An optimum printing surface and taste and odour neutrality were important criteria in the choice of material, says Stora Enso.

The combination of a cylindrical board tube and stoppers was first launched by Rowntrees of York in 1937.
