The new Magellano range of refrigeration compressed air dryers launched by Quantech removes the problem of underperformance or safety-tripping due to overheating – a key issue with dryers of a certain size.

Designed for flow rates from 22m3/min to 90m3/min, the dryers are rated to the ISO 7183 standard, which is based on an ambient cooling air temperature of 25°C. However, Quantech says that the air temperature in the compressor house where the dryer is installed is usually way in excess of this figure.

This means that a larger dryer, sized for the higher ambient temperature, should be selected, but capital cost and space considerations mean this rarely happens. The consequence is that the dryer runs hot, consumes more energy and the compressed air dewpoint rises. In some cases, the dryer’s safety switch trips and the machine stops altogether.

The Magellano dryer has a cooling air intake on one side only so it can be installed up against a grille or louvres in an outside wall. In this way it is cooled directly by outdoor air, usually at least 5-10°C below the plant room temperature.

It also has the option of centrifugal condenser fans, enabling the warm discharge air to be ducted into factory areas in the winter. This means anywhere from 10 to 90kW of free heating, depending on the model size.

There are 10 models in the range, each with a small footprint and microprocessor control.
