Nestlé has embarked on a radical overhaul of its UK packaging with new labelling to help consumers make healthier choices.

The new labels include calories per serving on the front of pack and a nutritional "compass" on the back, giving nutritional information per serving and per 100g. There are also key nutritional elements, depending on the product type. Dairy products, for example, highlight fat and calcium content.

Nestlé's director of strategic wellness, Nadia Sood, said the scheme was in line with government calls for clearer labelling and denied that Nestlé was jumping the gun by rolling out its own scheme before the Food Standards Agency (FSA) had completed consumer research into the best signposting system.

The FSA director of consumer choice and dietary health Gill Fine warned that a host of proprietary labelling would only confuse shoppers. The FSA will publish its consumer research into four signposting options later this year.
