The First Milk Cheese Company has cut fuel consumption by 7.5% on its three heavy-oil fired steam-raising boilers at its Haverfordwest creamery, thanks to the installation of Maxsys Fuel+ energy saving systems. The return-on-investment was less than a year.

The First Milk Cheese Company is the largest UK-based cheese supplier with a 35% share of the cheddar market. But with ever- increasing energy costs, it wanted to investigate installing fuel saving technology for its process steam production.

The creamery houses one Ruston Thermax boiler and two Byworth boilers. The plant operates 24/7 with all of the boilers on-line to cover periods of high demand.

Maxsys supplied and fitted three bespoke Fuel+ systems to each of the boilers. Fuel metering was already in place but water meters were installed prior to the project commencing.

Fuel meter readings were gathered three times a day by First Milk for the duration of the project.

The results showed that average oil consumption was 7.5% lower than predicted when the Fuel+ systems were installed.
