The food and drink manufacturing sector generates a GVA of £38bn and employs an estimated 474,000 people. Whilst its efforts to keep the nation fed are remarkable, the sector is facing unquestionable difficulties in recruiting and retaining a skilled workforce. Between June 2022 and 2023, ONS data showed a fall of 4,000 jobs (394k vs 398k) from the year prior.
The impact of recent political moves and bureaucratic red tape, alongside dwindling interest from domestic workers have all helped fuel the flames of the labour crisis. The sector’s productivity growth has slowed as a consequence, with the 2023 independent review into labour shortages in the food supply chain noting that this has significantly contributed to food price inflation compared to other domestic sectors and international counterparts. It’s evident that the worker shortage challenge requires a fresh approach. Beyond reshaping perceptions of manufacturing careers, a cultural shift is needed to help foster motivation and engagement among current employees.
This interactive session will explore ways of modernising your workplace, highlight examples of how to boost morale and instil a sense of ownership across line workers, and showcase strategies for implementing enticing career progression plans – ensuring both happy employees and happy margins.
