What is your area of focus / What certifications or qualifications are you working towards?
FDQ Level 3 Food and Drink Technical Operator
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in food manufacturing?
I was inspired to pursue an apprenticeship because having already been working in the industry at Noble Foods, I saw it as a great opportunity to deepen my knowledge through a blend of hands‑on experience and structured development. After leaving school, I completed a City & Guilds NVQ in carpentry and joinery, so the apprenticeship felt like a natural next step. It was an ideal way to gain a further academic qualification with the support of Noble Foods.
What appealed to me most was that an apprenticeship would allow me to apply new skills immediately, earn while learning, and grow within a team where I could benefit from mentorship and constructive feedback.
How did you find out about this apprenticeship program?
Our site manager, Michael Ward, asked if I would like to get involved and saw my potential as a future leader. I enrolled at site, and the Noble Foods HR team supported my application fully.
What are some of the key skills you’ve learned so far?
So far, I’ve developed a strong set of skills across both food safety and quality control. In food safety and hygiene, I’ve gained a solid understanding of HACCP principles, along with the correct methods for safely storing, handling and preparing food. I’ve also learned how to maintain high levels of cleanliness and prevent cross‑contamination, which is essential in ensuring safe production.
On the quality control side, I’ve built confidence in checking product consistency and monitoring key factors such as freshness, temperature, and presentation. I follow standard operating procedures to make sure all products meet both brand expectations and legal requirements. Through this, I’ve also developed a broad understanding of compliance and regulatory standards across different aspects of manufacturing.
How has your mentor or trainer supported your growth?
My mentor has played a really important role in my development. She is always available when I need guidance and consistently offers thoughtful, practical advice that helps me grow in my role. She’s incredibly supportive and has created an environment where I feel comfortable asking questions and learning from challenges. Most importantly, she genuinely believes in my ability, which has given me confidence and encouraged me to push myself further.
What has been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship?
The most rewarding part of my apprenticeship has been the confidence I’ve gained in my role and the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals. Developing practical skills that I can put into use immediately has made my learning feel meaningful and impactful, and it has helped me build a clear sense of direction for my future career.
What has made the experience particularly valuable is the hands‑on nature of the apprenticeship at Noble Foods. Instead of learning in a purely theoretical way, I’ve been able to practise new skills, make mistakes, learn from them, and improve in real time. This combination of structured learning and genuine on‑the‑job experience has given me a strong foundation and shown me how much I can grow within the industry.
Where do you see yourself in five years within the food industry?
In five years, I see myself continuing to build my career at Noble Foods and contributing to the business as part of its succession plan. I aim to keep developing my skills, taking on greater responsibility, and progressing into a more senior position where I can add real value.
