What is your area of focus / What certifications or qualifications are you working towards?
I am currently working towards a Level 4 (Higher) Process Leader Award with the University of Lincoln, which is a two-year duration apprenticeship programme. This is the equivalent of a Foundation Degree and will help me gain experience in the manufacturing industry. Once achieved, it will allow me to apply for a place in Greencore’s Manufacturing Graduate programme.
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in food manufacturing?
I was inspired to pursue an apprenticeship in food manufacturing because it will allow me to be self-reliant. It will lead to a solid qualification and the satisfaction of having proved to myself that I’m capable of working in food manufacturing.
How did you find out about this apprenticeship programme?
I found the apprenticeship through the Government’s apprenticeship website.
What are some of the key skills you’ve learned so far?
I’ve learnt lots of valuable skills, including operational, technical and leadership skills, quality control, people skills, problem solving and adaptability. Most importantly, I’ve learned about communication. The experience of communicating with lots of new people on a daily basis has enabled me to engage socially with confidence outside of work, which has opened significant opportunities, relationships and memories.
How has your mentor supported your growth?
My mentor supports my growth on a daily basis. People usually see managers as someone to fear but in reality we’re all people and you’ll be able to find out for yourself if you open yourself up to the opportunity. My manager has been my key point of contact and no matter the situation, he is always there to help me. Whether it’s a 1-1 sit-down or a simple call, I’m always provided with the support I require. I am grateful to have that support within the workplace.
What has been your most rewarding part of the apprenticeship?
The most rewarding part of my apprenticeship has been building relationships and skills – and of course the pay. The skills I have developed have enabled me to network within and outside of the workplace. The skills you gather in the food industry are transferable no matter what you decide to do after you have completed your apprenticeship – it is astonishing.
