The recall was issued after it was discovered that the product’s wheat (gluten) content was not declared on the label.
This would make the Special Fried Rice a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat, or coeliac disease.
As a result, Tesco has now recalled the product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, who will also inform their members about the recall.
The grocery giant has also issued a notice to its own customers, explaining why the product is being recalled and asking them to return the affected product (with use by date code 02 February 2026) to stores.
Tesco’s notice read: “We are recalling the use by date code 2 February 2026 of Tesco Special Fried Rice 350g, due to wheat not being declared as an ingredient on the product packaging. This may therefore pose a health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat.
“If you have purchased the affected product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat, please do not eat it and instead return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.”
In its own guidance, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has also urged affected customers not to consume the product and instead visit Tesco’s contact page at tesco.com/help/contact.
The news comes hot on the heels of a foreign body contamination event, in which Tesco was forced to issue an urgent recall on a batch of Lily’s Kitchen dog food after pieces of plastic were found. Meanwhile, Tayto Group is hit by a £153K fine after a mass salmonella outbreak.
