Jenkins, a finalist in the second series of the BBC’s hit show The Traitors in January 2024, decided to set up his business called Strength In You almost two years ago after successful careers in banking and insurance. At just 21, he escaped death and was told he might never walk, talk or recognise his family again after a serious car accident in August 1999.
After tackling hidden mental health struggles throughout his career, he decided to share his personal journey and support others who may be struggling.
Early in December he visited the Oscar Mayer site in Erith, South London, and spoke to 25 members of staff sharing his own journey.
Jenkins said: “This was my first time at a food manufacturing site and I was blown away by the operation, the care and dedication colleagues put into producing quality products every day.”
He added: “We had a fantastic session, and it was an incredibly humbling experience to hear people share their own stories, some of which were not too dissimilar from my own. Just talking and thinking about mental health is so powerful and can help people to come back stronger – I am living proof of that.”
Chief People & Corporate Affairs Officer Sarah Hill added: “At Oscar Mayer, the wellbeing of our colleagues is fundamental to who we are as a business. Andrew’s story was incredibly powerful and reminded us how important it is to create a culture where people feel safe to talk openly about their mental health. These sessions help break down stigma and reinforce that no one has to face challenges alone.”
Joe McGurk, Group Head of Diversity & Inclusion, added: “The reaction to Andrew’s session was outstanding. It was inspiring, emotional, and full of honesty. His story resonated deeply with many colleagues, and a few even felt comfortable enough to share their own experiences. We will be building on the success of the Erith event in the new year, with a further session planned for colleagues in Wrexham in January.”
