The union GMB said that the UK faces a Christmas crisps shortage as almost 50 workers making Hula-Hoops, McCoy’s, Pom-Bears and Discos have voted to strike.
It revealed that 85% of process operatives at KP Snacks in Billingham voted for industrial action after the company imposed additional duties and responsibilities without any increase in pay.
Paul Clark, GMB Organiser, said: “GMB members at KP are skilled workers essential to the production of crisps and snacks. Their expertise keeps operations running smoothly and supermarket shelves stocked, yet they are being asked to do additional work for the same pay.
“If they’ve been asked to do extra work, they should get more pay. They will not stand by while their workload increases without recognition.”
He added: “It’s crunch time for KP bosses, so unless they want to see the shelves empty this Christmas, it’s time to get back round the table and sort this out.”
KP Snacks said it remains in ongoing discussions to find a solution.
A spokesperson said: “We are disappointed by the outcome of this ballot, which involves a small number of our colleagues at Teesside, and we remain in ongoing discussions with them and the GMB.
“We value the Teesside team and the important role they play in producing our products and remain committed to constructive dialogue to find a resolution.
“In the meantime, robust contingency plans are in place to minimise disruption and ensure continuity of supply.”
KP Snacks head office is in Slough but it also has sites at Ashby-de-la Zouch, Rotherham, Leominster, Pontefract, Durham and Uttoxeter.
KP Snacks is not the only company facing strike action in the lead up to the festive period.
Drinks giant Diageo has already moved to reassure customers over the Christmas period as it faces potential strike action at its Belfast Brewery this week.
