Grind, the specialty coffee roaster, restaurant and coffee shop operator, has moved into the alcoholic ready-to-drink (RTD) market with the launch of its first cocktail in a can - the signature Grind Espresso Martini.

The pre-mixed Espresso Martini product has a 14.9% ABV and is sold in a 125ml can. It is blended with and barista-quality coffee and a double measure of premium vodka.

The flavour is described as “smooth and rich with a little chocolatey sweetness.”

The new ready-to-drink Espresso Martini is available in-store at WHSmith and Waitrose, as well as in Grind’s restaurants, coffee shops and online at its website.

Grind opened its first café in Shoreditch, East London, in 2011 and over that time has sold nearly a million espresso martinis. It also has a state-of-the-art coffee roastery along with its coffee shops and restaurants.

The roaster is tapping into a growing trend in the coffee market for brand extensions and the growth in RTDs.

According to the Lumina Intelligence report, Coffee Trends 2025, RTD coffee formats continue to accelerate, closely aligned with the growth of the food-to-go sector.

The global RTD coffee market reached an estimated $30 billion in 2023 and is projected to climb significantly by 2025.

In the UK, sales are on the rise as consumers seek convenient, barista-style beverages on the move.

According to the report: “What once belonged primarily to major players such as Starbucks, Costa and Jimmy’s Coffee now shares shelf space with speciality roasters including Grind, Hunt & Brew and Pact. Their arrival signals a shift towards higher quality, traceable provenance and lower-sugar formulations.”

The report said that while non-alcoholic RTD formats remain a natural companion to the worker’s lunch, they also act as a gateway for younger consumers.

However, the report also highlighted that older, more discerning coffee consumers are now over-indexing in coffee occasions compared with the total out-of-home market.

The growth in RTD cocktails is also continuing. The Wonderland Cocktails range from Brewdog Distilling Co. recently obtained listings in 460 Sainsbury’s stores and 220 Waitrose stores.
